Tom Mitchell was knocked off his bike by a car during the Liam Ball triathlon in Derry yesterday, ending the race in casualty at Altnagelvin hospital. I hope recovery is speedy and that the incident has not put you off the sport.
Tom, Good to see you up on your feet on Tuesday. I'm ready for the cyclists vs motorists challenge when you are! Hope the aches and pains are bearable.
Thank goodness all seems good news compared to initial reports... It's comforting to know that in such a circumstance there are OTC members there to help sort out car ,kit and generally liaise with family when such an incident happens... again thanks to Ali,Heather,Emma,Neville & Penny who took control of the situation as it unfolded....
Thankfully this is a seldom occurance but perhaps indicates a need for racing members to ensure that a buddy system occurrs at each race so that we at least know where clothes & car keys are in the event of accident etc...
I spoke to the organiser afterwards and had to concole him somewhat as he was beside himself with worry. Unfortunately it is very hard to legislate for motorists who ignore road signage & cyclists as in Tom's case. There was plenty of Road signage and Marshal's all over the course. From what I've been told the driver overtook Tom and then imediately turned into a garage and cut-up Tom... another occassion of the driver saying I didn't realise he was going so fast....she actually seen Tom before trying to turn ......Crrrrrazy
Well done to all OTC members who were racing over the weekend.
As far as I know, some soft tissue damage. Nothing broken and his bike lived to tell the tale. Emma and Heather went over to the hospital and Emma drove his car home.
Thanks for all the messages and calls - much appreciated. And extra thanks to Heather, Penny, Emma and Neville for coming to the hospital and chauffering me and my gear home.
Medics had initially thought right femur was broken but several X-rays thankfully showed otherwise. So just a few cuts, and some deep bruising (still developing!). Pretty stiff and sore all over today but that's to be expected. So just looking forward to getting these few days over with and getting on with recovering. As ever, the summary is unlucky it happened, but lucky it wasn't any worse!
Thanks again, and hope to see you all soon.
Cheers,
Tom.
